How Much Does HVAC Monitoring Cost for a Restaurant?

Across the market in 2026, simple temperature monitoring commonly runs from tens of dollars per month per location, while full fault-detection platforms are usually quoted per unit. The spread is wide because "monitoring" covers very different things.
What are you actually paying for?
Three things, which vendors bundle differently, so it's helpful to price them separately. The hardware is the sensors on the unit and the connectivity to get data out, sometimes bought outright, sometimes rolled into the subscription. The subscription is the real product: the analysis that turns raw readings into "this unit is developing a problem" rather than a wall of charts. Installation is the third, and it's where the range is widest, because a system that needs an electrician and wiring costs multiples of one with clip-on battery-powered sensors that go on during a normal service visit.
What do the different options cost?
Rough shape of the market, from cheapest to most involved. Pricing moves and most vendors quote per fleet, so these numbers are probably best read as orientation rather than quotes:

The first two rows and the third are different products. A threshold alert tells you the walk-in is already warm, which is useful but late. Fault detection is aiming earlier: the unit still holds temperature but is working harder every week, which is the stage where the repair is still small. What does a failure cost by comparison?
An after-hours emergency call-out bills at emergency rates before a part has been touched, and the repair itself is typically several times the cost of the same fix done as scheduled work, which we break down in emergency call-out vs planned repair. A failure also has costs beyond the repair: spoiled stock if a walk-in quits, and lost covers if the dining room can't hold temperature in July. When is monitoring not worth it?
Sometimes it isn't. Brand-new equipment under a strong warranty with a good preventive maintenance contract has less to gain in year one, the failure risk is lower and someone else is partly carrying it. A single small unit that can fail without hurting the operation is another. Monitoring earns its cost on equipment past its early years, where a failure closes or spoils something. If the maintenance budget is already going to emergencies, that's usually the sign the numbers will come out in monitoring's favor.
