Restaurant AC Keeps Tripping the Breaker: Stop Resetting and Start Reading It
A breaker is a measurement device with exactly one message: the circuit pulled more current than it's rated to survive. Resetting it doesn't answer the question. It just asks it again, louder.
There's a ritual in a lot of kitchens: the AC breaker trips mid-service, someone walks to the panel, flips it back, and everyone carries on. The third time it happens in a week, it's practically a job on the closing checklist. Here's the problem: a breaker is a measurement device with exactly one message, and the message is that the circuit pulled more current than it's rated to survive. Resetting it doesn't answer the question. It just asks it again, louder.
What's actually happening
Something on that circuit is drawing too much current, either in a spike (usually at compressor start) or as a sustained overload (usually a motor working too hard or a fault). Breakers also weaken with age and repeated trips, so a breaker that has tripped many times can itself become the component that fails. The task is finding out which of these it is before the answer becomes obvious in the worst way.
The likely causes, roughly in order
Hard-starting compressor. The single most common pattern: an aging compressor (or one with a failing start capacitor) pulls a longer, heavier inrush at start-up until the breaker lets go. Trips cluster at start, typically when the unit kicks on during the lunch ramp, exactly when the kitchen's other equipment is also loading the panel. Failing capacitor or contactor. Cheap parts whose failure makes expensive parts work harder. A weak run capacitor leaves the compressor running hot and heavy; pitted contactor points do similar. Caught early this is a minor service item.
Dirty condenser coil or blocked airflow. The system runs at higher pressure, the compressor draws more current continuously, and on hot afternoons that sustained draw crosses the line. Trips that cluster on the hottest days point here.
Electrical faults. Chafed wire insulation, moisture in a rooftop connection box, a motor winding breaking down and shorting. These are the trips you don't get to ignore: a short trips instantly and repeatably.
An overloaded circuit, not a faulty unit. Kitchens evolve. Equipment gets added, and a circuit that was sized correctly ten years ago now lives at its margin every service. The AC is just the biggest load and takes the blame.
What it costs if you wait
Three ways this goes, all worse than a service call. One: the compressor motor is failing, and every reset runs it further toward a replacement that costs a large multiple of the diagnosis that would have caught it. Two: the breaker itself wears out and starts nuisance-tripping or, worse, stops protecting. Three, the one that should end the reset ritual: repeated resets into a genuine electrical fault is how switchboard and wiring damage happens. An AC outage loses you a comfortable dining room for an afternoon. An electrical fire loses you the restaurant.
There's also the quiet operational cost nobody attributes: every trip is an unplanned cooling outage during service, and the dining room feels it before anyone reads the panel.
What the data shows before it becomes a failure
Electrical problems are the best-behaved failure category in monitoring terms, because current is directly measurable:
- Start-up current rises against its own baseline. A compressor's inrush signature drifting upward over weeks is the classic precursor to the hard-start trip pattern.
- Running current climbs on hot days first. The overload path shows up as sustained draw creeping toward the breaker rating whenever the system is under load, before the first trip ever happens.
- The trips themselves have a pattern. Time-stamped trips cluster: at start-up (compressor/capacitor), on peak-temperature afternoons (condenser/airflow), or randomly and instantly (fault). The pattern is half the diagnosis, and a reset log on a clipboard is better than nothing. A current sensor is better than a clipboard.
What to do now
If the breaker has tripped more than once in a month: stop treating resets as the fix. Note the time and conditions of each trip (start of cooling? hottest hour? raining?), and hand that pattern to your contractor. It turns a hunt into a diagnosis. If trips are instant and repeatable, leave it off and make the call; that's the fault pattern.
